May 2012
Without great caregivers, you can’t have a great hospital. During this month, we celebrate both National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week (May 6-12), and I would like to dedicate this message to all those at Stony Brook University Hospital who have chosen a profession of healing, compassion and care. With more than 5,600 employees working at Stony Brook University Hospital, together we play a major role in the healthcare of those living in Suffolk County and beyond. We provide care that ranges from primary care to highly specialized services and do it in a way that truly makes a difference for our patients and their families. In 2011, we again made a major impact with:
But the most important statistic is the fact that approximately 70 percent of our operating budget represents “human capital.” I never take for granted the fact that our employees and their actions positively impact the lives of our patients and families. The key to our ongoing growth and success is to remain true to our mission, vision and values. The next year will be filled with more strategic growth as we aim to exceed the expectations of those we serve. As Long Island’s premier academic medical center, the community looks to us not only for outstanding clinical care, but also for our commitment to research, furthering new discoveries, and education, inspiring future generations of caregivers. To raise awareness of Stony Brook Medicine’s role in the community, we recently launched a new advertising campaign. The campaign’s theme, “Best Ideas in Medicine,” focuses on the unique patient benefits of academic medicine. The ads feature our employees explaining the many medical research projects that they are working on and how these ideas from our laboratories directly improve the lives of our patients. Whether you see an ad in a newspaper, hear our radio commercials as you are driving, or see television or online ads, I hope that you will share the same sense of pride that I do when thinking about the great ideas that are generated here at Stony Brook Medicine. Lastly, the selection process for a chief executive officer is almost complete, and I am excited about the future leadership of Stony Brook University Hospital. My time spent here has reconfirmed my belief in the dedication and loyalty of our Hospital employees. The spirit of caring is evident throughout our facility and will continue to enable us to be a healthcare leader for Long Island families. I appreciate the efforts of each and every one of you and hope you will join me in taking the time to reflect on our many successes and the impact we’ve had on those we serve. Fred S.
