Even if Cardiac Surgery patients do not have diabetes, keeping their blood sugar under good control after surgery lowers the risk of infection and other problems. "Under good control" means their blood sugar should be 200 mg/dL or less when checked at 6:00 A.M. the morning following their surgery.

At SBUH, 95% of a sample of 121 eligible Cardiac Surgery patients had a postoperative serum glucose level is 200 mg/dL or less when checked at 6:00 A.M. the morning following their surgery.

A high score is better than a low score.
