Stony Brook Nutritionist Selected as a "Health Care Hero"
Long Island Business News honors Dr. Josephine Connolly-Schoonen with the Health Care Professional Award
STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 28, 2012 –Stony Brook Medicine’s Dr. Josephine Connolly-Schoonen, has been selected as a recipient of the 2012 Health Care Professional Award by the Long Island Business News. The award recognizes healthcare professionals other than a physician or a nurse whose performance is considered exemplary by patients and peers.
Dr. Connolly-Schoonen, PhD, RD, an Associate Clinical Professor and Executive Director of the Nutrition Division in the Department of Family Medicine, was honored by the organization for “improving food environments in community agencies, such as public schools and child care agencies, and as an expert in obesity prevention and management.”
“Dr. Connolly-Schoonen is a creative healthcare professional who is committed to improving the health of patients, families, and the community,” says Dr. Jeffrey Trilling, Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. “Her leadership of Stony Brook-run programs that educate the public on proper nutrition practices has brought innovative nutrition services to many communities in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”
At Stony Brook, Dr. Connolly-Schoonen established the Nutrition Division and initiated the development of numerous community-based programs to reduce obesity and promote healthy eating. These include the Heart Links Project, the Long Island Center for Pediatric Obesity Prevention, and the Stony Brook Heights Rooftop Farm.
