of MS during the patient education series. |
their health and well being during a
fall seminar series titled “Living Well with MS.” Sponsored by the Department
of Neurology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and the MS
Comprehensive Care Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center, the free
series includes presentations and interactive discussions with healthcare experts
from the Center and other professionals specializing in issues related to MS.
The seminars
are held Thursday evenings, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at 179 Belle Bead Road
in East Setauket. Seminar dates are: September 15, October 13, November 3, and
December 8.
The first
seminar, held on September 15, is titled “Your Loved One has MS – Now What?”
This session is geared to family and friends of MS patients. Led by Marijean
Buhse, Ph.D., R.N., N.P., Clinical Professor, Stony Brook University School of
Nursing, topics include information on what to expect when a person develops MS
and tips for helping patients manage their disease.
On October 13,
“Cognitive Function in MS” will be presented by Chris Christodoulou, Ph.D.,
Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology. Dr. Christodoulou will discuss
common memory problems related to MS and strategies for minimizing the effects
of cognitive impairment.
On November 3,
Lauren B. Krupp, M.D., Professor of Clinical Neurology and Co-Director of the
MS Comprehensive Care Center at SBUMC, will present some of the latest research
findings in the field of MS. Participants are encouraged to ask any questions
related to MS, including current and future strategies for treating the
disease.
On December 8,
Dr. Krupp’s team will explain to participants how stress can trigger disease
symptoms and therefore suggest how patients can minimize holiday season-related
stress.

Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center at SBUMC
The MS
Comprehensive Care Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC) is
dedicated to the care and treatment of adult individuals with MS. The team of
practitioners includes neurologists, nurses, and physical therapists that
specialize in MS. The Center offers comprehensive consultative services and
ongoing care to patients and their families. The Center is closely affiliated
with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Through the Center, patients are
offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. Furthermore, Stony
