Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital Holds "Soar for a Cure"
STONY BROOK, N.Y., September 1, 2011 – Let's go fly a kite at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook on Saturday, September
24, from 2:00 to
4:00 pm. "Soar f or a Cure" is a free kite festival to help raise awareness
about childhood cancer, as September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month. Pediatric cancer patients, their families and friends will take part in
the festival, sponsored by the Sunrise Fund of the Division of Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital. At the event there will be an informational table on childhood cancer and the Sunrise Fund. Each child/young adult will receive a kite to fly. Adults interested in flying kites are also welcome to fill the sky with kites of all colors during the festival. Other activities for children include decorating kites and face painting. There will be live music, and goodies include popcorn, cotton candy and ice cream. AmeriCorps students from Stony Brook University dressed in costumes, such as Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Elmo, will entertain the young ones. About the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital The Sunrise Fund was created in 1999 as a grassroots organization by concerned parents of patients. Through the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital, the fund raises money to establish numerous initiatives to help children fighting cancer and lend support to their families. Doctors, nurses, child care specialists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals make up the Sunrise Fund team. ###
