Adult Inpatient Psychiatry

Adult Inpatient Psychiatry (10 North) is a thirty bed adult, inpatient psychiatric unit providing confidential and caring services for those suffering from an acute episode of mental illness requiring hospitalization. Common diagnoses may include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and others. The age range starts at sixteen years and continues through the geriatric age group. Patients on 10 North may be admitted either voluntarily or involuntarily, each with legal status protecting individual rights. The doors to the unit remain locked, for the safety of all concerned.

An interdisciplinary team of professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers, and activities therapists), complemented by support staff and students from various disciplines will work together to evaluate how to best help you. The treatment team will see each patient on daily rounds in the morning. All decisions regarding your care will be made by this team, along with you and any significant others you may designate. Therapeutic interventions may include medication, group activities such as music, occupational and/or recreational therapy, talking groups, participation in the therapeutic unit environment, and electro-convulsive therapy for select individuals.

In most cases, it will be desirable to maintain contact with selected individuals who are important in your life outside the hospital. Visitors are permitted according to unit policy. Also, coin-operated telephones are available for your use. In-coming mail is delivered regularly, and out-going mail can be mailed for you.

In order to help you regain your highest level of functioning, the staff provides direction and assistance as needed with your activities of daily living. You will be encouraged to attend group activities that will help you learn (or re-learn) essential skills needed for independent living. You will be asked to dress in a casual and appropriate manner.

As your condition improves, you may become eligible for off-unit privileges, or perhaps off-grounds therapeutic passes. These experiences will help prepare you for discharge. Your social worker will assist you in planning for your living arrangements and follow-up care after discharge.

At the end of your stay, you will be asked to complete a Patient Satisfaction Survey. This will help us improve our services. Of course, we welcome your perceptions and input at anytime during your stay.
