Continuing Day Treatment Program (CDTP)

normal medium large

The Continuing Day Treatment Program (CDTP) at Stony Brook University Medical Center provides psychiatric care for patients who do not require hospitalization. This voluntary, time-limited, comprehensive program offers an alternative to inpatient treatment to select individuals, and offers to others a smooth transition from the inpatient setting to community living.

The program encourages patients to resolve problems and reach their individual treatment goals. Patients participate in various activities such as group therapy, skills development groups, daily living groups and activities therapy groups.

An interdisciplinary team of physicians, registered nurses, social workers and an occupational therapist provide caring assistance in a therapeutic setting. One member of this team will be identified as the primary therapist for each patient, taking a special interest in his or her progress. Patients may also have contact with other professionals, such as psychologists, dieticians, and students training in various health professions.

The CDTP helps maintain and/or enhance the patient's functioning and living skills. Staff members assist patients with community living endeavors and help them develop self- awareness and self-esteem. This is accomplished, in part, through identification and development of individual strengths and interests.

The CDTP is structured to help those struggling with mental illness to make informed choices about the community environments in which they will be living, working and socializing. It also assists them in developing the skills and supports needed to be successful and personally satisfied in those environments.

Any healthcare professional can make a referral to the CDTP by forwarding the information listed below. A screening interview will then be scheduled.
