Neonatal Intensive Care

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Stony Brook (NICU) is a 40-bed regional perinatal center whose highly trained and dedicated staff delivers care for premature and sick infants using modern technology with a nurturing touch.

Infants in the NICU are delivered in our own Labor & Delivery suite or at other area hospitals that refer their patients to our intensive care nursery. Stony Brook's NICU has a transport team that travels to the referral hospital to stabilize the infant and transfer the baby to the NICU.

A team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, radiologists, chaplains, physical therapists and many more services work together to provide care to the patient, education and support to the family, and promote developmental and physical growth of infants in a family-centered environment. Learning to take care of a baby begins at birth and we encourage the families to visit and become a part of the care process.

At discharge, we continue to follow many of our patients through the NICU follow-up clinic and the Infant Apnea Program. Many of the same physicians and nurse practitioners that care for the patients in the NICU will see the babies after discharge.

Families that potentially may have a baby admitted to the NICU are encouraged to tour the unit where they can meet the staff that will care for the baby, learn about equipment and procedures, understand the visiting policies and have an opportunity to ask questions before the baby is born.
