WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE, NEW YORK, NY

Thursday July 27 and Friday July 28: Widespread 103 to 106F expected across most of NE NJ and NYC. Upper 90s to Low 100s, locally 105F elsewhere.

During periods of extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and it can be hard for people to maintain a normal temperature.  Heat disorders usually occur after overexposure to heat, or after over-exertion for a person's age and physical condition. Children and the elderly are more prone to heat stroke and dehydration and need to be especially careful.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps and vomiting.  Heat exhaustion can be alleviated by moving to an air-conditioned space or taking a cool bath.

Heat stroke symptoms include high internal temperature (over 103 degrees), rapid pulse and red skin.  At such high body temperatures a person can experience confusion or lose consciousness.  In the case of heat stroke the patient or bystanders should call 911.  While waiting for medical attention provide water or ice, and remove restrictive sports equipment like chest protectors and masks.
