Held during the first week of November, Compliance and Ethics Week enables us to celebrate Stony Brook Medicine’s strong culture of compliance.
Compliance is everyone’s responsibility, and we can be proud of our long-standing tradition of ethical and responsible conduct. Our Compliance Program is designed to promote an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct consistent with laws, regulations, and our policies and procedures. Our Compliance Program contributes to and supports Stony Brook Medicine’s mission in delivering world-class compassionate care to our patients.
In alignment with Stony Brook Medicine’s strategic pillars, our Compliance Program:
• Fosters an environment that prevents and detects fraud, waste and abuse
• Enhances processes and improves operational efficiencies
• Safeguards our organization by assessing risks and providing guidance
• Promotes collaboration and teamwork
Every employee, agent and medical staff member – including state, research foundation and personnel employed through contracted agencies of the hospital – is expected to adhere to the Corporate Compliance Code of Conduct, whether it be interacting with other hospital representatives, patients and their families, vendors, government regulators or the general public.
Our Compliance Program:
• Defines the standards of conduct expected of each of us
• Provides guidance on legal and ethical issues
• Offers mechanisms for reporting possible violations of law or ethical principles
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing to maintain safety for our patients and staff, the Office of Compliance and Audit Services, the HIPAA Privacy Office and other Compliance areas that typically provide various educational activities will be sending daily educational email blasts throughout the first week of November. Additionally, moving forward, Compliance and Ethics Week will be celebrated at Stony Brook Medicine during the first week of March every year, so look for further communications next year from Lori Strauss, our Chief Compliance Officer.
