Gonadotropins are sometimes used in IUI cycles. In these cases, FSH stimulation increases the number of eggs produced, and, ultimately, ovulated. In essence, the more eggs you make, the more "targets" there are for the sperm to hit.
It is important to know that this type of medication in the IUI cycle can increase your chances of having twins or more. Thus, this type of stimulation isn't right for everyone. Talk to your doctor; they can determine the best protocol for you.
If it is determined that these medications are a good fit for you, your doctor may prescribe Gonal-F or Follistim.
Gonal-F and Follistim are injectable gonadotrophin medications that contain the hormone FSH, which is the follicle-stimulating hormone. Even though different manufacturers make them, they are entirely interchangeable. Gonal-F comes as a pre-filled pen, and Follistim comes in medication cartridges inserted into a pen for injection. Both medications were made easy to use, and you can adjust both pens to your dose for easy use.
Ovidrel is used in combination with Gonal-F or Follistim to help with the "timing of ovulation" in your cycle. This medication contains the hormone (hCG), which triggers ovulation. Through blood work and sonogram, your doctor will figure out the best time to “trigger". After you trigger, your doctor will have you come into the office for an IUI (intrauterine insemination).
