Stony Brook Children’s, however, has two and is the only hospital in Suffolk County and just one of two on Long Island to offer this specialty for children.
We provide care tailored to the needs of children by doctors who are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of rheumatic diseases, as well as who have access to the latest research and treatment. With correct diagnosis and aggressive early intervention, children can better manage these chronic diseases, avoid irreversible damage or lifelong complications and participate in the typical activities of childhood.

Conditions Treated:
- Dermatomyositis – an uncommon medical condition that usually starts with a rash followed by muscle weakness
- Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) – the most common type of arthritis in children
- Systemic lupus erythematosus – a long-term disease that can cause inflammation affecting multiple organs
- Raynaud’s phenomenon – a disease that causes some areas of the body – such as fingers and toes – to feel cold and numb as a result of exposure to cold weather or stress
- Kawasaki Disease – inflammation of medium sized arteries throughout the body
- Henoch-Schonlein Purpura – inflammation and bleeding in small blood vessels in the skin, joints, kidneys and intestines
- Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO/CNO) – an inflammatory condition affecting the bones
- Granulomatous with Polyangiitis (Wegener’ Granulomatosis) – inflammation of the blood vessels causing damage to the upper respiratory tract, lungs and kidneys
- Polyarteritis Nodosa (PAN) – inflammation of the blood vessels that can cause damage to the body’s organ systems
- Behcet’s Disease – inflammation of the blood vessels throughout the body
- Uveitis – a type of eye inflammation
- Sjogren’s Syndrome – an inflammatory disease that generally affects the tear and salivary glands
- Scleroderma (systemic and linear) – a hardening and tightening of the skin
- Psoriasis – a common skin condition that causes skin cells to form scales and red patches
- Autoinflammatory disorders – illnesses caused by dysfunction of the body’s immune system presenting as unexplained recurrent fevers

- Education on biologic therapies
- Joint aspirations (removal of fluid from the space surrounding the joint)
- Intraarticular steroid injections of certain joints (direct delivery of medication to the joint)
Our Team
The core of our team consists of two physicians board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Rheumatology, and a nurse practitioner. They take a multidisciplinary approach, bringing other Stony Brook Children’s experts such as physical therapists, ophthalmologists, orthopaedists, dermatologists, infectious disease specialists and other pediatric specialists onto the team as needed.
