How America’s Best Hospitals Are Determined
Recipients of the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award are recognized for overall clinical excellence based on quality outcomes for 34 conditions and procedures for 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades reviews three years of Medicare inpatient data, comparing actual to predicted performance for specific patient outcomes. This year’s awards are based on data collected from 2015 to 2017.
Demonstrating Superior Outcomes
According to Healthgrades, when treated at one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals from 2015 to 2017, patients were more likely to have a successful treatment without major complications — and have a lower risk of dying, an average of 25.2 percent lower. When being treated for specific health conditions, patients at these hospitals had a:
- 21.7 percent lower risk of dying from a heart attack
- 24.8 percent lower risk of dying from a stroke
- 29.2 percent lower risk of dying from heart failure
- 23.7 percent lower risk of dying from sepsis
And during that same time period if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals Award™, 172,950 lives could potentially have been saved for specific conditions and procedures.
