Frequently Asked Questions About COVID-19 Clinical Trials

What types of coronavirus-related research is Stony Brook Medicine currently involved in?
Our researchers have launched a number of clinical trials to address the symptoms and effects of COVID-19 in patients who have been hospitalized with severe disease. Here is a list of some of the studies currently underway.

How do researchers at Stony Brook enroll patients into their research studies?
Each clinical trial has a list of eligibility requirements, describing certain characteristics that must be shared by all study participants. Patients who meet these criteria are selected at random to either receive the treatment being studied or a placebo. This ensures fairness and eliminates any bias or partiality that could potentially affect the results of the study.

I’ve heard about specific clinical trials to treat COVID-19, such as the one with the antiviral drug, Remdesivir, and the trial using blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients. How can patients enroll in that?
For every clinical trial, there are different eligibility requirements that are determined with clinical assessment of the patient, as well as specific FDA protocols that must be followed when enrolling patients in the trial. The random selection process ensures that the entire process is fair and equitable.

Can a patient be transferred from another hospital to enroll in a clinical trial at Stony Brook?
At the current time, we are only enrolling patients into our COVID-19 clinical trials who have been admitted directly to Stony Brook University Hospital.
