Stony Brook Medicine’s three-fold mission as an academic medical center is well known: clinical care, research and education. But there is a fourth mission we routinely fulfill as well: community service. And that mission has been on full display recently during our employee and public vaccination efforts.
“Teamwork makes the dream work,” as the expression goes. And while the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine for the general public is an unprecedented effort for our country and the state, the team at Stony Brook Medicine has gone to extraordinary lengths to help the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) stand up its vaccine site on the Stony Brook University campus that we are operationally staffing. The project has been a true demonstration of how Stony Brook works best when we work as one united campus to fulfill a common and pressing public need.
The state’s vaccination site became operational on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Innovation and Discovery Center in SBU’s Research and Development Park off Stony Brook Road.
The start of providing the vaccine to the general public is a significant step in finally getting this pandemic under control. We still have a long way to go, but now there is a genuine reason for hope for a brighter future in the days ahead.
I would like to thank all the SBM and SBU personnel who had a hand in getting the vaccine site underway so quickly in order to meet the public’s clamoring demand for the vaccine.
Please be aware that although we are hosting a state vaccination site, the NYSDOH determines vaccine eligibility and guidance on how it should be distributed. Appointments are made through the DOH website and open up as supplies become available. Check the website routinely for updates if you are eligible: https://am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov/.
Stony Brook is committed to providing vaccinations for as long as necessary and as long as vaccines are supplied to us by the state. You can visit our own website for more information: https://www.stonybrookmedicine.edu/patientcare/COVID-19_vaccine_info.
Thank you again for everyone who made this vaccination site possible. Together we will get through this, and we will emerge stronger, both as a community and as one united Stony Brook campus.

I received my first shot on Januaray 22nd. I can't say enough about how organized and well run the POD was. Upon entering the building, after filling out the paperwork, the shot was in my arm within 10 minutes. There was plenty of Staff to direct you and everyone made you feel very comfortable. Thank you for doing such an excellent job!!
