Nurse Practitioner Week, November 12 though 18, is celebrated annually in recognition of nurse practitioners (NPs) nationwide, honoring them and their vital role in patient care. This year’s theme is “Recognizing Heroes in Health Care.”
At Stony Brook Medicine, we have employed NPs since the early 1980s, and today there are 384 SBM practitioners who support the management of healthcare within our hospital system.
These skilled professionals have demonstrated a commitment to providing care in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Nurse practitioners have full practice authority in the State of New York and are licensed independent practitioners after 3,600 hours of full-time employment. Stony Brook Medicine employs nurse practitioners who are credentialed as adult, pediatric, neonatal, acute care, women’s health, and psychiatric mental health NP providers.
Led by Barbara M. Mills, DNP, Director of Advanced Practice Providers, Stony Brook Medicine nurse practitioners support access to care in a person-centered model while providing equitable, high-quality healthcare for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership.
Congratulations to all our nurse practitioners and thank you for your contributions, dedication and hard work to support Stony Brook Medicine, our patients and the communities we serve.
