STI Center for Suffolk County

At the Stony Brook STI Center, we offer comprehensive STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for preventing HIV infection, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after exposure to HIV.

If you suspect that you have already contracted a sexually transmitted illness, our STI Center offers quick testing, diagnosis, and treatment. We treat all STIs, including syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, mycoplasma genitalium, trichomoniasis, and hepatitis.

No insurance? We can help. We offer testing and treatment discreetly, and without any insurance codes where that is necessary. Immigrant status won't affect your care either. Our center has access to funding that allows us to provide free testing and treatment for patients who need that additional help.

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) involves taking antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV. PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV from sex, when it is taken as prescribed. It also reduces (but does not prevent) the risk of getting HIV from drug use. Our STI clinic can help you with prescriptions for PrEP.

What is PEP?

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) involves administering HIV medications within 72 hours of a potential HIV exposure. The earlier PEP is commenced after potential exposure to HIV, the higher the likelihood of success in preventing transmission.

With testing for STIs, our clinic offers convenient and fast screening opportunities for individuals concerned about their sexual health. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can occur during any type of sexual contact and are caused by varying factors, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Some common forms of STIs include:

  • HIV: A virus that attacks T cells, weakening the immune system and leading to AIDS if untreated. Symptoms may include headache, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, night sweats, and swollen glands.
  • HPV: There are over 100 types of human papillomavirus, some causing genital warts and others linked to cervical cancer in women.
  • Chlamydia: A common STI caused by a bacterial infection that can affect the genital, rectal, or throat areas, potentially impacting pregnancies. Chlamydia symptoms include abnormal discharge, pain/burning when urinating, and rectal pain or bleeding.
  • Gonorrhea:A highly contagious bacterial STI that affects reproductive and other areas, posing risks during pregnancy. Although gonorrhea often has no symptoms at all, it may cause include swollen testicles, pus-like discharge from the rectum, or vaginal discharge and bleeding for women.
  • Genital herpes: A common STI caused by herpes simplex viruses, which can be asymptomatic but lead to outbreaks, posing risks to newborns during childbirth.
  • Syphilis: Spread through sexual contact and caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria, the stages of syphilis include sores, rashes, and potential long-term complications that are especially concerning during pregnancy. The first symptom of syphilis is a small sore called a chancre. Secondary syphilis can cause a variety of symptoms.
