Tara L. Huston, MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery and Dermatology in the Stony Brook Medicine Department of Surgery's Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has been selected as a Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM®) Fellow for 2024-25. The prestigious ELAM program hosted at Drexel University College of Medicine, the institution successor of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (the nation’s first degree-granting women’s medical school), is the only long-term leadership program in North America that focuses on preparing women for executive roles in various areas of healthcare.
"I am honored to have been selected as a 2024-2025 ELAM Fellow," said Dr. Huston. "I look forward to representing Stony Brook Medicine and using the knowledge and skills we obtain to benefit our institution."

Dr. Huston, who is President of the Stony Brook Medicine Medical Staff, Chair of the Renaissance School of Medicine Committee on Admissions and President of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, joins 97 other ELAM Fellows for 2024-25, which is the largest ELAM class in the program's 30-year history. Over those three decades, there have been more than 1,500 ELAM graduates many of whom now serve in leadership positions at academic health centers, globally. Dr. Huston is the third ELAM Fellow to be selected from Stony Brook, joining Latha Chandran, MD, MPH (2006), and Meenakashi Singh, MD (2012).
Candidates for the ELAM Fellowship Program must have demonstrated professional ambitions and achievements, and navigated through challenges in their path to leadership or in their leadership career development. They must also be backed and nominated by a dean or senior official from their institution. Dr. Huston was nominated by Peter Igarashi, MD, Knapp Dean, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
“I am delighted that Dr. Tara Huston has been selected for ELAM, a highly-competitive national program for promoting the development of mid-career women faculty," said Dean Igarashi. "Dr. Huston’s appointment as an ELAM Fellow recognizes her leadership accomplishments and potential. Under the ELAM program she will work with Dr. Todd Griffin, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, on the development of a comprehensive breast cancer service line. The mentorship and networking opportunities in ELAM will benefit not only Dr. Huston but ultimately our patients at Stony Brook Medicine.”

The fellowship will conclude on April 30 and May 1, 2025, at the Leaders Forum (an event to highlight each fellow’s Institutional Action Project) and graduation in Philadelphia. Dr. Huston and Dean Igarashi will be in attendance for all of the festivities, including the ELAM 30th anniversary gala event at the Four Seasons Hotel.
