No bones about it…the Orthopedic Unit is the place to be for "all your bone needs"! Orthopedics is located on L-14 of University Hospital Stony Brook, the only Level 1 trauma center in Suffolk County. Our mission is to provide the highest quality care for patients experiencing traumatic skeletal injuries, degenerative joint disease (arthritis) as well as all acute and chronic diseases of the bones. The Total Joint Replacement Center is part of our unit; we provide specialized care to patients after a total knee or hip joint replacement.
To provide our patients with comprehensive care we use a team approach; our team includes your surgeon, physicians, a nurse practitioner, registered nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, a care coordinator (discharge planner), clinical assistants and YOU! Communication is key, we encourage you to help us by voicing your needs. Each member is essential to your care and committed to helping you achieve your optimum physical state. You may think some of our medical equipment resembles exercise apparatus and you would be correct! Our goal is to get you up and moving, strengthen your injured bones and muscles through physical therapy and exercise.
The visiting policy is liberal, the hours are from 11:00 am to 8:30pm, and for patient comfort only 2 adult visitors are permitted at the bedside. Adherence to the visiting policy provides a safe and therapeutic environment for you - our patient. Along with physical activity and medication, rest supports healing. Together we can reach your treatment goals.
