If you or your dentist detect an abnormality, you may be referred to an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, who will take your medical history and perform a comprehensive head and neck exam. In some cases, a biopsy may be required to arrive at a proper diagnosis. A biopsy is the surgical removal of a small piece of tissue for microscopic examination. Biopsies can be performed in-office at Stony Brook Oral Pathology.
