Stony Brook's Department of Surgery is well represented on this year's Castle Connolly Top Doctors list. The annual list for the New York metro area, which is based on peers surveyed by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., includes nine of the department's surgeons.
The list includes doctors from four Stony Brook hospitals: Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children's Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. Stony Brook Medicine saw 114 of its physicians chosen this year from 48 different specialties.

Criteria used to evaluate doctors for Castle Connolly's list include professional qualifications, education, hospital/faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation and disciplinary history. Several thousand practicing physicians are surveyed each year. Only about 7% of the practicing board-certified physicians in the United States have achieved Top Doctor status.
