Stony Brook Surgery's Georgakis Accepted Into Prestigious Society of Surgical Oncology Mentorship Program

Georgios Georgakis, MD, PhDGeorgios Georgakis, MD, PhD, of the Stony Brook Department of Surgery's Division of Surgical Oncology, has been accepted into the Society of Surgical Oncology's (SSO) 2025 Career Catalyst Mentorship Program (CCMP). SSO’s prestigious CCMP provides opportunities for support and development to mid-career, up-and-coming, surgical oncology leaders.

The CCMP was created to provide a long-term structured mentoring relationship for those accepted into the program. Applicants for the CCMP must be active SSO members, be employed, and be seven to 15 years post-fellowship or completed surgical oncology training. The SSO also offers mentorship programs for surgical residents (Foster the Future Program) and early career surgical oncologists (Presidential Scholars Program).

As part of his selection, Dr. Georgakis (who is the first doctor from Stony Brook to be accepted into the CCMP) will attend the SSO 2025 Annual Meeting in Tampa Bay, and will be paired with a mentor within the SSO and surgical oncology community. He will also be required to attend SSO 2026.

Dr. Georgakis will visit his mentor's institution for a week-long observership at some point over the next year. He will also need to attend 75% of the  monthly webinars during that same period.
