We are Long Island’s oldest and most active kidney transplantation program, having performed over 2,000 transplants since the program was created in 1979.
Among the nation's best.
We have one of the nation's fastest transplant rates, which means shorter waiting times for patients on the donor list. This places us in the top 20 percent of programs nationally, by patient volume.
An unparalleled level of care.
Our kidney transplant team comprises world-class surgeons, compassionate nurse coordinators and caring administrative staff focused on making your experience at Stony Brook as pleasant as possible. We understand that seeking out a possible kidney transplant as an alternative treatment for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) can be confusing, overwhelming and time consuming. We will work at your pace and guide you every step of the way, from the moment you walk through our doors as a pre-transplant patient to each time you visit the transplant clinic for any follow up care.
Finding the perfect match.
When a kidney transplant is decided as a course of treatment for ESRD, we utilize the Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) which measures ten dimensions of information about a donor to express the quality of the donor’s kidneys relative to other donors. This ensures we are transplanting our patients with the most appropriate, best suited organ for them personally.
Exceptional results.
We have lower-than-expected post-transplant readmission rates, infection rates and dialysis rates. And, we are the only pediatric transplant program on Long Island with a 100 percent success rate for new kidney function, one year after transplant.
Urology and Nephrology services.
Our multidisciplinary team continually works alongside Stony Brook’s expert urologists and nephrologists to diagnose and treat various forms of kidney disease and many urologic conditions (cancerous and benign) that are most prevalent in adults and children.
