Specialized Transplant Services for Children with Kidney Disease
Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in Suffolk County to perform kidney transplants for children. For pediatric patients, our success rate for new kidney function one year after transplant is 100%. This is due to the combined experience and expertise of our transplant surgeons working together with our dedicated pediatric nephrology team. The Stony Brook pediatric nephrology team was ranked as one of the best in this specialty by U.S. News & World Report.
Pediatric renal transplant recipients are closely followed by a team of specialists that includes a pediatric nephrologist, cardiologist, and infectious disease specialist in addition to a transplant surgeon.
We have a dedicated Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic where practitioners work in collaboration with the transplant team to provide the highest level of care to children throughout the entire pre- and post-transplant process. Services include pre-transplant screenings, post-transplant inpatient and outpatient follow-up, and immunization services to prevent post-transplant infections.
Stony Brook Children’s works to ensure that children come first and that their families play an active and vital role as members of their treatment team. We call this patient and family-centered care. This approach not only better serves patients — giving them well-managed care with a sense of continuity and comfort — but it also contributes to outcomes that typically exceed national benchmarks.
Our team is customized to meet the needs of the individual child and may consist of pediatric specialists and subspecialists, residents, fellows, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and social workers, along with the family and the child’s referring physician.
