Message from the Chief (cont.)

photo of Dr. BuscagliaI graduated from Union College in 1997 and received my medical degree in 2001 from SUNY Buffalo. I completed a medical internship and residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following residency, I enrolled in the three-year general gastroenterology fellowship program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. I remained on staff at Johns Hopkins for an additional fourth year of training within their advanced endoscopy fellowship (AEF) program.

Academically speaking, my research interest has always centered on pancreatico-biliary malignancies. I continue to remain heavily involved in both clinical and translational research in this arena, as well as quality in GI endoscopy.

I am a recent past president of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE), and thus remain quite involved with our local and regional colleagues in the tristate area. I have been serving as Associate Editor, and now Senior Associate Editor, of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (the AGA's "blue journal") since 2014 - a job which keeps me quite busy in the evenings and on weekends.

Photo of Dr Bob ShawDr. Shaw trained in gastroenterology at Stanford University before coming to Stony Brook as GI faculty in 1987. His career was devoted to education and research, having inspired several colleagues and fellows over the years to pursue successful academic and clinical careers. Some of the comments included here below from colleagues and friends exemplify the loss felt by the passing of Dr. Shaw.

"Bob's measured views were always a place of solace for me as we traveled the complex road of academic medicine together" ... "his wisdom regarding many worldly topics and especially his contagious wit" ... "his contributions made a difference ... to help to improve the future quality of our Veteran care provided. He will be sorely missed by all" ... "Bob's contribution to who they have become will continue to enrich the rest of us far beyond his time."    Photo of Dr Shaw on boat

Bob Shaw was an avid wind surfer, tennis player, fisherman and photographer. Most notably, Bob will be remembered for his roles as a sounding board, steadying influence, colleague and friend to many.
