All cosmetic procedures are performed by our board-certified dermatologists specializing in aesthetic medicine. We offer a full range of facial rejuvenation treatments including using hyaluronic acid dermal filler injectables to skin resurfacing techniques using cutting-edge technology across our full suite of lasers.
To support many patients’ desire for increased self-satisfaction and greater wellbeing, we have expanded our cosmetic medicine division over the past several years, in order to meet the increasing demand for treatments that address unwanted body fat, smoother and less texturized skin, and hair loss. Our offerings now include Coolsculpting, Microneedling and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair regrowth.
Why Facial Rejuvenation?
Unlike the skin on our body, the skin on our face is exposed every day, and compromised by recurring habits we do both consciously or unconsciously resulting in signs of aging or wear over time. These include smiling, squinting, frowning, and furrowing of the eyebrows which all continually tug on the skin.
Cosmetic dermatology provides treatment that can help to slow these natural processes and soften the effects of time, using products derived from essential components that skin draws on for structure, texture and firmness. Evidence-based cosmetic medicine proves early intervention is the gateway to prolonged, youthful, fresher-looking skin, while preventative maintenance works to preserve what we desire to stay looking our best. Dr. Adrienne Haughton speaks more on this topic in the article "What is Facial Rejuvenation?".
Facial Lines and Wrinkles
Many factors can cause face lines outside of the normal cellular changes that may occur, such as thinning of the outer skin layer, decreasing pigment-containing cells (melanocytes) and increases of their size which cumulatively result in skin that looks thinner, paler and clear.
The skin’s outer layer contains proteins, connective tissue, collagen fibers that provide support, and elastin fibers to provide flexibility and strength. Over time, the production of collagen (protein), which is responsible for keeping skin hydrated and tight, slows allowing creases in the skin to remain unfilled. Hyaluronic acid found in the connective tissue creates cushion and lubrication that gives skin a youthful glow. Loose skin combined with fat loss that clumps up and shifts downward from gravity results in sinking, sagging skin, which is also known as volume loss. This volume loss prevents the skin from conforming as closely as it did during youth to facial structures that provide contour, creating bags under the eyes, sagging eyelids, and/or jowls.
Aging naturally changes these skin attributes, resulting in lessening of skin firmness and its ability to bounce back. There are other elements hat hasten aging skin as well, such as continuous exposure to the sun and environmental free radicals such as sunlight (UV radiation), air pollution, smoking, alcohol, and poor nutrition. These things cause oxidative stress, the same phenomenon that happens to an avocado when its flesh has been exposed.
The good news is, by starting aesthetic conditioning earlier rather than later in life, you can proactively slow down the visible effects of aging.
The Power of Cosmetic Dermatology
Cosmetic dermatology is the counteractive medical treatment for skin damage. However, performing cosmetic dermatology properly requires a fundamental understanding of facial anatomy and expertise in specialized techniques to help reproduce the look of your skin before it aged. That’s why it’s so important to choose a physician trained in dermatology when considering any of these cosmetic treatments.
