Stony Brook Gastrointestinal Care Recognized by Healthgrades

Stony Brook University Hospital received a Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award, as well as a five-star (the highest level) rating for the treatment of GI bleed in 2024.

The Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award recognizes hospitals with superior clinical outcomes in both medical and surgical gastrointestinal (GI) care. Specifically, the focus is on outcomes related to colorectal surgery, gallbladder removal surgery, and upper gastrointestinal surgery and treatment of bowel obstructions, gastrointestinal bleeds, and pancreatitis.

In addition to the Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award, the hospital also received a Five-Star Distinction for Treatment of GI Bleed. A GI bleed is a sign of a disorder or condition in the digestive tract. Symptoms of GI bleed can be obvious such as the passage of black, tarry stools; rectal bleeding; or vomiting of blood. Less obvious signs that are associated with GI bleeding can include lightheadedness, fainting, difficulty breathing, and chest or abdominal pain. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is the first line of diagnostics and treatment for patients with GI bleeding.

“At Stony Brook, we’re fortunate to be able to provide rapid, efficient and high-quality care to patients with a multitude of gastrointestinal diseases, including those with GI bleeding and pancreatitis,” said Olga Aroniadis, MD, MSc, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook Medicine. “When necessary, we seamlessly collaborate with our surgical colleagues, who are a direct extension of our team, in order to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care.”

The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed that the variation in performance among hospitals continues to widen, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs.
