The mission of the Center for Interprofessional Innovation (CIPI) is to promote and foster a culture of interprofessional collaboration in education, practice, andragogy, and scholarship that is embraced by faculty, students, preceptors, practitioners, and all members of the Stony Brook Medicine community and the university at large.

What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs “when students from two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes”(WHO, 2010).

What is Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP)?

Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) happens when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings (WHO, 2010)

What is Interprofessional Collaborative Learning (IPCL)?

Interprofessional Collaborative Learning (IPCL) happens when faculty, students and practitioners recognize each profession’s distinctive disciplinary expertise, values the benefits of teamwork, and encourages a learning culture in which these principles are taught and modeled in an environment of respect, cultural sensitivity, and with psychological safety in mind(CACHE, 2019IPEC, 2023).

Stony Brook IPECP Initiatives:

The Center for Interprofessional Innovation promotes and fosters a culture of collaboration and community partnerships:

  • Healthy Libraries Program (HeLP): A partnership between the Public Libraries of Suffolk County, a unique team of healthcare professionals, and graduate student interns to provide access to both in-person and virtual healthcare-related resources for public library patrons. Stony Brook's Program in Public Health, School of Social Welfare, School of Nursing, and Physician Assistant students and faculty are engaged in this initiative. HeLP provides students opportunities to experience an interprofessional team and demonstrate the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC, 2023) core competencies.
  • Partnership to Advance Collaborative Education (PACE): The PACE Center is an interprofessional health and wellness center that focuses on meeting the health promotion and disease prevention needs of older adults. Our team provides no-cost health screenings and a personalized list of recommendations and health information based on your needs and circumstances. Stony Brook's Schools of Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Nursing and Social Welfare students and faculty are engaged in this program.

  • Stony Brook HOME: An interprofessional student-led free clinic dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the underserved community in Suffolk County. Find out more about our events and programs here. Stony Brook's Schools of Medicine, Health Professions, and Social Welfare, and the College of Arts and Science students and faculty are engaged in this program.
